The history and origins of Tulu

Believed to be one of the oldest Dravidian languages, Tulu has a unique linguistic structure and a distinct script. It finds its roots in the ancient Brahmi script, which was prevalent in this region during the early centuries. Over time, Tulu evolved and developed its own script known as the Tigalari script, which is still used by scholars and enthusiasts today.

The origins of Tulu are deeply intertwined with the history of Tulunadu. It is believed that Tulu was the language spoken by the indigenous people of this region, who were known as the Tuluva. Its history can be traced back to ancient times, where it has been spoken and preserved by the Tuluva community. It is characterized by its extensive use of vowels and a relatively small number of consonants.

This linguistic feature gives Tulu a distinct rhythm and flow, making it a delight to the ears of those who understand and appreciate its beauty. The vocabulary of Tulu showcases its rich cultural heritage, with words influenced by Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam, and other languages. This linguistic fusion reflects the historical exchange of ideas, trade, and cultural interactions that have shaped Tulunadu over the centuries. One unique aspect of Tulu is its exclusive use of the Tulu script, which is derived from the ancient Brahmi script. This script, although not commonly used in contemporary times, is a testament to the rich literary heritage and intellectual pursuits of the Tulu-speaking community.

Water Metro Coming to Tulunadu: A New Way to Travel! https://tuluadda.com/water-metro-coming-to-tulunadu-a-new-way-to-travel/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 10:00:39 +0000 https://tuluadda.com/?p=2355 Public transportation plays a crucial role in the development of river and coastal areas, and various states across the country have recognized its significance by initiating Water Metro projects. Karnataka, being no exception, is planning to introduce this service in the coastal city of Mangaluru.

What’s Happening?

Under the guidance of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, a meeting of the Water Transport Board was recently convened. During this meeting, it was unanimously decided to implement the Water Metro project in Mangalore, following the successful model of Kochi in the state of Kerala. The officials were promptly instructed to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) at the earliest convenience. The initial phase of the project will focus on water metro services from Bengre to Mangalore and Ullal to Mangalore. The final decision on whether to execute the project through Public Private Partnership (PPP) or any other viable method will be based on the Feasibility Report, which will be assessed by the Water Transport Board.

What is Water Metro?

Imagine a small ship that can travel on rivers and seas, connecting major towns along the coast and river basin. That’s what a water metro is. The concept of a Water Metro is an innovative transport system that offers significant potential solutions to urban congestion and environmental issues in coastal cities. This mode of transportation operates on waterways, using electrically powered boats or ferries, providing commuters with a reliable and sustainable alternative to traditional road-based transportation.

The Water Metro system typically includes designated piers for boarding and alighting passengers along the water routes, strategically placed at key transit hubs. These pontoons are equipped with modern amenities such as ticketing kiosks and waiting areas, ensuring passenger comfort and convenience. Efficient scheduling and frequency of services help minimize waiting times while maintaining high capacity utilization. Additionally, the environmental benefits of the Water Metro cannot be overstated – reducing traffic congestion, noise pollution, and carbon emissions caused by conventional modes of transport, all while promoting eco-friendly mobility in urban areas near water bodies.

Water Metro in Kochi

In April of last year (2023), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first water metro in Kochi, Kerala. Since its inception, a staggering 1,113,615 passengers have availed themselves of this service until November 7. These water metros are powered by electric hybrid technology and boast substantial battery capacity. Furthermore, they make stops at 38 stations along their routes.

The need for water metro in Mangaluru

The need for a water metro in coastal areas is a crucial step towards addressing the growing urban congestion and transportation challenges faced by these regions. Coastal areas, which are often densely populated and heavily reliant on tourism and maritime industries, experience significant traffic congestion during peak seasons. Implementing a water metro system would not only alleviate road traffic but also provide an efficient and sustainable mode of transportation.

The network could connect key hubs such as airports, tourist attractions, and commercial centers, allowing residents and tourists to conveniently access desired destinations along the coast. Moreover, a water metro can help reduce pollution caused by road travel, thus contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems. Additionally, it would create job opportunities in sectors related to its operation and maintenance while stimulating economic growth through improved connectivity within coastal communities.

Expanding to Other Places

It has come to our attention that two water metro boats, skillfully constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), have been dispatched to Uttar Pradesh. These vessels are anticipated to navigate various regions, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Mathura. Additionally, six electric hybrid-powered boats are currently in the manufacturing stage and are projected to be delivered by June. With the exception of Kochi in Kerala, no other part of the country currently offers water metro services. By extensively utilizing these boats as a means of public transportation, the region’s connectivity network will be fortified, fostering greater accessibility and convenience for the local residents and tourists alike.

The introduction of these electric hybrid-powered boats not only promotes eco-friendly transportation but also reduces the carbon footprint in these regions. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of sustainable development and showcases their commitment to modernizing public transportation infrastructure across the country. As these boats ply through the serene waters of Ayodhya, Kochi, Mangaluru,Varanasi, and Mathura, they will not only provide a scenic mode of travel but also boost tourism in these culturally rich destinations.

By introducing the Water Metro project in Mangalore, the state government of Karnataka aims to enhance connectivity, promote sustainable transportation, and foster economic growth in the region. This initiative not only underscores the importance of public transportation but also showcases the state’s commitment to embracing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. So, get ready, Mangaluru! The Water Metro is coming your way, and it’s going to make traveling a whole lot easier and more fun!

The Rich History and Unique Variations of Plum Cake for Christmas in India. https://tuluadda.com/the-rich-history-and-unique-variations-of-plum-cake-for-christmas-in-india/ Sun, 24 Dec 2023 16:27:36 +0000 https://tuluadda.com/?p=2269 The joy of Christmas in Mangalore is a captivating experience that blends religious traditions with local customs, resulting in a truly enchanting celebration. In this coastal city of Karnataka, southwestern India, the festival is marked by an extravagant display of lights, carol singing, and beautifully decorated churches adorned with vibrant flowers and flickering candles. The rich culture and deep-rooted Christian heritage are reflected in the midnight mass held at St. Aloysius Chapel, where mesmerizing stained glass windows depict biblical scenes. Furthermore, the resounding harmonies of traditional Konkani carols fill the air as families gather around their beautifully decorated Christmas trees to exchange gifts and feast on delectable dishes like plum cakes, nevries (sweet pastries) and sorpotel (spicy pork stew). The genuine warmth and radiant spirit of Mangalorean’s during this festive season make it a truly delightful experience for both locals and visitors alike.

When it comes to Christmas celebrations in India, one dessert takes center stage – the plum cake. This delectable treat has a rich history dating back to the time of British colonial rule and has become an integral part of Indian culture. Despite its name, plum cake rarely contains actual plums. Instead, it is made with a variety of dried fruits, nuts, spices, and sometimes even local ingredients. In this article, we will explore the evolution of plum cake in India, its unique variations across different regions, and the fascinating stories behind its creation.

During the British colonial era, plum cake was introduced to India as a festive treat enjoyed by the British expatriates. The cake was traditionally made with plums, which were abundant in Britain during Christmas time. However, due to the unavailability of plums in India, local bakers began substituting them with dried fruits like raisins, currants, and dates.

Over time, as Indian bakers experimented with different ingredients and flavors, the traditional plum cake underwent a transformation. They started incorporating local spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg to infuse it with an Indian twist. These aromatic spices not only added depth of flavor but also complemented the sweetness of the dried fruits. Furthermore, regional variations emerged across India as different states put their own spin on plum cake. In Kerala, for example, cashew nuts and coconut were added to enhance its richness and texture.

The Origins of Plum Cake

The origins of plum cake can be traced back to medieval England, where the weeks leading up to Christmas were a time of self-denial and fasting. This period, known as Advent, prepared the body for the upcoming feasts and indulgences of the Christmas season. During this time, a special porridge-like dish was cooked and eaten on Christmas Eve. This porridge consisted of oats, dried fruits, spices, honey, and sometimes even meat. Over the centuries, this porridge evolved into what we now know as plum cake.

In the 16th century, the porridge began to undergo changes. Oats were replaced with flour, and butter and eggs were added to the mixture. The batter was then cooked in a muslin cloth in a pot of boiling water or baked in ovens in wealthier households. The resulting cake, often served upside down with a sprig of holly as garnish, became known as plum pudding or plum cake. The name “plum” is believed to have originated from the use of raisins or prunes (dried plums) in the recipe.

The Introduction of Plum Cake in India

The tradition of Christmas cake in India started in 1883 when a British planter in Thalassery, Kerala, asked a local baker named Mambally Bapu to recreate the rich plum cake he had received from England. Bapu decided to incorporate local ingredients into the cake, using locally brewed liquor made from cashew apples and a banana variety called “kadalipazham” instead of European brandy. This unique twist gave the cake a distinct Indian flavor.
The success of Bapu’s creation led to the popularity of Christmas cake in India. Today, every city has its own iconic bakeries known for their Christmas cakes. In Kolkata, Nahoum & Sons is renowned for its delicious plum cakes, while Albert Bakery in Bengaluru is a favorite among locals. The tradition of baking and sharing plum cake during the Christmas season has become deeply rooted in Indian culture.

While the essence of plum cake remains the same across India, each region has its own unique twist on the recipe. The culinary traditions of different regions influence the ingredients and baking process, resulting in delightful variations of plum cake.

Mangalore Plum cake

Plum cake holds a significant place during Christmas festivities in Mangalore, known for its rich cultural traditions. This delectable delicacy is a quintessential part of the local cuisine during the holiday season. Made with a blend of dried fruits such as raisins, candied citrus peels, and currants, soaked in rum or brandy to enhance its flavor and preserve it over time, plum cake embodies the essence of Christmas. The batter is meticulously prepared by incorporating an array of ingredients like all-purpose flour, butter, eggs, sugar, baking powder, and spices such
as cinnamon and nutmeg. The mixture is then poured into baking pans and slowly baked to perfection. Served sliced into moist and flavorsome pieces adorned with crunchy nuts on top, this warm treat brings joy and nostalgia to both locals and visitors alike. Whether enjoyed with a cup of tea or shared among loved ones at festive gatherings, plum cake has become an enduring tradition synonymous with Christmas celebrations in Mangalore.

Kerala Plum Cake

In Kerala, plum cake holds a special place in Christmas celebrations. The cake is made with a mix of dried fruits, nuts, and spices, which are soaked in rum for weeks to infuse the flavors. Kerala plum cake is often made with butter or ghee, giving it a rich and moist texture. It is also known for its generous use of spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, which add warmth and depth to the cake.

Goan Bebinca Plum Cake

In Goa, the traditional plum cake takes on a distinct Goan twist. Instead of using regular flour, Goan plum cake is often made with a combination of coconut milk, rice flour, desiccated coconut, semolina, and ghee. This gives the cake a unique texture and flavor profile. The use of local ingredients reflects the vibrant culinary heritage of Goa.

Regional Variations

Plum cake recipes vary across the country. These regional variations in plum cake recipes reflect the diverse culinary traditions and cultural influences found across the country. India’s rich agricultural landscape provides an abundance of fruits, each unique to different regions. By incorporating local fruits like mangoes or pineapples into plum cakes, people not only infuse their desserts with a distinct flavor but also celebrate the bountiful produce of their land. Furthermore, the integration of traditional Indian sweets such as petha or murabba into plum cake recipes adds another layer of complexity and richness. These sweets are often made from ingredients like pumpkin or various fruits that are cooked in sugar syrup until they become candied delights. Incorporating them into plum cakes not only enhances the taste but also pays homage to age-old Indian confectionery practices. The beauty of these diverse recipes lies in their ability to bring families together through shared experiences and cherished memories. Many households have their own secret recipes that have been passed down through generations, creating a sense of continuity and preserving family traditions.

Baking Challenges and Innovations

Baking plum cake in India hasn’t always been an easy task. In the early days, the availability of quality flour and yeast posed challenges for bakers. Yeast was traditionally used as a leavening agent, but it’s temperamental nature made consistent baking difficult. To overcome this, some bakers replaced yeast with locally brewed liquor or used egg whites for aeration. Moreover, the lack of proper ovens also posed a challenge. Many households had to resort to
improvised baking contraptions, such as using hot sand and live charcoal or sending pre-mixed batter to local bakers with wood-fired ovens. The determination and resourcefulness of Indian bakers resulted in unique methods and flavors that are now cherished traditions.

The Joy of Christmas Cake

The preparation of plum cake in India is a labor of love. Weeks before Christmas, families begin soaking dried fruits and nuts in rum or other alcoholic beverages to infuse them with rich flavors. The aroma of the cake baking in the oven fills the house, creating a festive atmosphere. The cake is often shared with family, friends, and neighbors as a symbol of joy, love, and togetherness during the Christmas season. The plum cake has become an integral part of Christmas celebrations in India, with each region adding its own unique twist to the recipe. From Mangalore’s rum soaked plum cakes to Kerala’s spice-infused plum cakes, the variations showcase the diversity and creativity of Indian cuisine. Baking challenges have been overcome through innovative techniques, ensuring that families
across the country can enjoy this delectable treat during the festive season. So, this Christmas, savor a slice of plum cake and experience the rich flavors and traditions that make it truly special in India

The much-anticipated event, known as the ‘Viswa Gita Paryaya,’ is scheduled to take place from January 8th to January 18th, 2024.

At the helm of this grand celebration is the esteemed Swamiji of Puthige Muth, Shree Shree Sugunendra Theertha. Renowned for his tireless efforts to promote and propagate Hindu Sanatana Dharma both within India and across the globe, Swamiji has earned the revered title of ‘Jagadguru.’ On January 18th, 2024, he is set to attain the ‘Sarvajna Simhansana’ for the fourth time, signaling his commitment to continue serving for an additional two years in the Paryaya tradition. Swamiji extends an open invitation to all devotees to join in this auspicious event.

Notably, Swamiji’s dedication to the promotion of Hinduism transcends geographical boundaries. He was previously invited by the UAE President, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during the foundation ceremony of a temple in Abu Dhabi.

To kickstart the preparations for this grand event, the Organizing Committee of India convened a meeting at the Fortune Atrium Hotel in Al Karama, Dubai, on September 26th, 2023. Praveen Kumar Shetty, Chairman of the Fortune Group of Hotels, was unanimously selected as the President of the UAE Paryaya Committee. The meeting brought together prominent leaders from Udupi, including Raghupathi Bhat, former MLA and Minister in the Government of Karnataka, Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde, Sharath Hegde, Praveen Kumar Shetty, Puthige Vasudev Bhat of Venus Group of Restaurants, Arun Ganiga, Yathish Shetty, Shodhan Prasad of Sandhya Creations, Sugandhraj Bekal, and Sudhakar Rao Pejavar, President of Brahmanara Samaj Dubai, among others.

Raghupathi Bhat, a key figure in the Paryaya Committee, provided insights into the program’s significance and shared its historical context. His enlightening discourse left all attendees captivated, shedding light on the age-old tradition observed by the Ashta Mutt for many years.

Praveen Kumar Shetty expressed his support for the Paryaya and praised Raghupati Bhat’s commendable efforts. He graciously accepted the role of President of the UAE Samithi, pledging to hold further meetings to garner more devotee participation.

Udupi holds a special place in the hearts of devotees as the abode of Lord Shree Krishna and a coastal city with a rich heritage. The history of Udupi’s Krishna Idol, consecrated by Lord Parushurama and worshipped by Rukmini Devi, dates back to Dwapar Yug. Shree Madhwacharya established the tradition of Paryaya, where eight muths take turns every two years to perform pooja rituals to Lord Krishna.

During the meeting, Raghupati Bhat also shed light on the remarkable work of Shree Shree Sugunendra Theertha Sripadaru, the 31st pontiff in the lineage of Shree Upendra Theertharu. Swamiji’s extensive travels across the country and abroad have led him to advocate for the significance of the ‘Sri Bhagavad Gita’ as a solution to humanity’s problems. His ‘Gita Mandir,’ built during his second Paryaya in 1992, stands as a testament to this belief.

H.H. Swamiji’s contributions to the preservation and awareness of Sanatana Dharma have extended globally, with the establishment of Sri Puthige Muth Krishna Temples in several countries.

Swamiji’s vision for his historic 4th Paryaya is to transform it into the ‘Vishwa Gita Paryaya.’ To achieve this, he has launched the ‘Koti Gita Lekhana Yagna,’ a global project aimed at educating tens of millions of people about the Gita.

Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde, during the meeting, introduced the dignitaries and outlined the grand Paryaya celebrations scheduled to commence on January 8th, 2024. The festivities will include the Purva Pravesha of Sri Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji, the Hore Kanike ceremony starting on January 9th, 2024, and the ascension of the ‘Sarvajna Peetha’ by His Holiness Sri Sri Sugunendrateertha Sripadaru on January 18th, 2024. A grand Paryayay Darbar with other pontiffs will follow this historic moment.

The Paryaya celebrations are expected to last for nearly a fortnight, featuring a plethora of cultural programs, music, and dance performances by renowned artists.

In a joint invitation, Raghupathi Bhat and Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde extended their warm welcome to all UAE residents, with special arrangements promised for Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs) to ensure their comfort during the celebrations. The UAE Samithi, led by President Praveen Kumar Shetty, is tasked with coordinating participation details from UAE residents.
