Mangaluru is known for its fish. If Mangaluru is the kingdom for fish, then Giri Manjas is undoubtedly the King in this kingdom. This nondescript eatery is tucked away in Mangaluru’s Car Street. It is a tiny door eatery, which is a landmark in the city, due to the food which is served.
It’s not only the locals. Tourists make sure to visit Giri Manjas. So much is the popularity. Popular comedian and Kannada star Danish Sait loves the hotel, so much that whenever he visits Kudla, he makes sure to visit the eatery.
The restaurant was founded by Giri Pai, in 1984. At the time, the restaurant did not even have a name. His son Manjunath Pa introduced the ever popular Tawa Fry. The restaurant’s name is a combination of Manjunath and Giri. Both of them are now no more.
The Tawa Fry became an instant hit and business picked up for the restaurant. BBC even mentioned the restaurant in a story it did on tiny eateries in India. After Giri’s death in 2002, Manjunath took over the management of the restaurant. Manjunath passed away in 2015 due to a heart attack, and his wife Nandini Pai is now managing the hotel.
Nandini did not want all her husband’s hard work to go in vain, by giving the hotel to any other management. She is managing the hotel. Even though Manjunath is not there, nothing has changed, when it comes to taste as well as hospitalities.
All the Tawa fries are popular here. Meals along with any fish Tawa fry is loved by the customers. The price is also not much compared to other fish hotels in Mangaluru, who charge a bomb for an average meal.
Even though Giri Manja has been asked to open franchisees in other cities, Nandini is not interested. She wants to concentrate only on thi eatery and give maximum satisfaction to all food lovers.
The eatery is situated in a narrow lane. But still people park their car far and come walking. The eatery has a homely ambiance.
