Udupi Activates AI-Powered Speed Radar Cameras at Six Key Locations

Udupi: The Udupi District Police have activated AI-powered speed radar cameras at six important locations across the district. The move is aimed at reducing road accidents and improving traffic discipline on busy highways and major roads.

The new radar cameras can automatically detect vehicles that exceed speed limits. They can also identify several other traffic violations, helping police enforce rules more effectively.

Where Are the Radar Cameras Installed?

The speed radar cameras have been installed at the following locations:

  • Doopadakatte, Karkala – Speed Limit: 60 kmph
  • Uchila, Padubidri – Speed Limit: 80 kmph
  • Near Dandatheertha School, Kaup – Speed Limit: 80 kmph
  • Thekkatte, Kota – Speed Limit: 80 kmph
  • Trasi, Gangolli – Speed Limit: 80 kmph
  • Nayakanakatte, Byndoor – Speed Limit: 80 kmph

Motorists passing through these areas should strictly follow the prescribed speed limits.

What Can the Cameras Detect?

The AI-based system is designed to identify multiple traffic violations. These include:

  • Over-speeding
  • Riding without a helmet
  • Seat belt violations
  • Triple riding on two-wheelers
  • Wrong-side driving
  • Mobile phone usage while driving

The cameras capture images and vehicle details automatically. The information is then sent to the traffic monitoring system for verification.

Why Has the System Been Introduced?

Road accidents caused by over-speeding continue to be a major concern in Udupi district. National Highway 66 and other major roads witness heavy traffic every day.

Police officials believe that automated enforcement will encourage safer driving habits and help reduce accidents.

More Locations Planned

The Udupi Police have identified 14 additional locations for future installation of radar cameras. The expansion is part of a broader plan to strengthen the district’s Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).

Officials say the project will improve road safety and make traffic enforcement more efficient.

Motorists Advised to Follow Traffic Rules

Police have urged motorists to drive responsibly and obey traffic regulations. Violations detected by the radar cameras may result in automatic e-challans being issued to vehicle owners.

With advanced technology now monitoring key roads, authorities hope to make Udupi’s highways safer for residents, commuters, and visitors.
