Known globally for promoting Indian cuisine, Khanna’s visit to coastal Karnataka was more than a culinary journey—it was an emotional reunion with a place that played a significant role in shaping his understanding of food, culture, and human connection.

Vikas Khanna’s Special Bond with Udupi and Karnataka

Sharing his memories on social media, Vikas Khanna revealed that his connection with Karnataka began during his college years in Manipal. However, it was in Kalsanka, near Udupi, where he found a deeper sense of belonging.

Khanna fondly remembered an elderly sculptor named Gangadhar, who operated a small workshop creating Hindu deity sculptures. Despite language barriers, the two formed a remarkable friendship that would leave a lasting impact on the future celebrity chef.

“I rarely understood his words, but I understood his generosity, his devotion, and his love for Karnataka,” Khanna recalled.

How a Local Family Introduced Vikas Khanna to Karnataka’s Cuisine

According to Khanna, he frequently visited Gangadhar’s workshop before and after college. Over time, Gangadhar’s family welcomed him into their home as one of their own.

His wife would prepare simple homemade meals, introducing Khanna to the authentic flavors of Karnataka. These experiences became the foundation of his appreciation for regional Indian cuisine.

“The flavors became our language,” Khanna said, reflecting on the special bond he shared with the family.

He described their modest kitchen as his first true masterclass in Indian regional cooking. Long before becoming one of India’s most celebrated chefs, Khanna learned invaluable lessons about food, tradition, and hospitality from this family in coastal Karnataka.

Return to Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt Brings Back Memories

One of the highlights of Khanna’s visit was his return to the historic Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi. It was Gangadhar who had first introduced him to the temple decades ago.

The chef recalled walking through Udupi’s narrow streets with his friend, visiting the sacred temple and experiencing its unique spiritual atmosphere. Those visits left a lasting impression and continue to occupy a special place in his heart.

Memories of Karkala, Malpe and Coastal Karnataka

Khanna admitted that whenever life becomes challenging, his thoughts often return to coastal Karnataka. He remembers the warmth of a family that embraced him without expectations, offering friendship, guidance, and home-cooked meals despite differences in language and background.

During his latest visit, as he celebrated Karnataka’s rich culinary heritage, his memories naturally travelled back to Karkala, Kalsanka, Malpe, Sri Krishna Mutt, and Gangadhar’s home, remembered for its beautiful jackfruit tree in the courtyard.

“A piece of my heart will always remain there,” he said.
